Optometrists Association of Kenya

True eye care with love

The Optometrists Association of Kenya (OAK) was established in 2009 by a group of pioneering individuals driven by the vision of unifying optometrists to advocate for the recognition of their profession within the country’s healthcare system. With a humble beginning of only five members, the association gradually expanded its membership, officially registering with approximately 20 members in 2019. Since then, OAK has experienced remarkable growth, boasting a membership of 450 optometrists, which represents around 70% of the total optometric workforce in Kenya.

Throughout its history, OAK has been a steadfast advocate for optometrists, tirelessly pushing for their recognition within the eyecare sector and advocating for the expansion of their scope of practice, including their inclusion in the services provided by ophthalmic workers. This advocacy has been instrumental in elevating the profile of optometry in Kenya and ensuring that optometrists play a pivotal role in delivering quality eyecare services to the population.

Over time, OAK’s influence has extended beyond advocacy to encompass a range of initiatives aimed at promoting eyecare awareness and accessibility. The association has organized various events, including its inaugural scientific conference in 2022, and has actively participated in outreach programs such as the Gift of Sight program, which has provided vision screenings and distributed spectacles to thousands of individuals in

need. OAK has also been involved in initiatives such as vision screenings for public service vehicle (PSV) drivers, demonstrating its commitment to promoting road safety and ensuring that drivers maintain optimal vision health. Despite facing changes in leadership, with three regime changes occurring in 2019, 2022, and most recently in March 2024, OAK has remained steadfast in its mission to advance the field of optometry and improve eyecare services in Kenya. With representation on key policymaking bodies, including the National Eye Health Working Group, OAK continues to be a driving force in shaping policies that govern the eyecare industry, cementing its position as a respected and influential organization within the sector.
