Optometrists are eye care professionals who offer a wide range of services related to vision care. Optometrists are trained to examine, diagnose and treat eye diseases, as well as to evaluate and dispense vision correction solutions such as glasses, contact lenses and other vision aids. The roles of optometrists are to assess vision, diagnose vision problems, prescribe eyeglasses and contact lenses, detect eye diseases and refer patients to ophthalmologists for further treatment. Optometrists also provide vision therapy and post-surgery care, as well as providing advice on nutrition and lifestyle for eye health. It is important to visit an optometrist for a comprehensive eye exam, especially if you have any concerns about your vision or if you are experiencing any eye symptoms. An optometrist can detect any eye diseases at an early stage and provide the necessary treatment
The main difference between an optometrist, optician and ophthalmologist is their level of training and expertise. An optometrist undertakes a four or five year degree or a three year diploma in optometry.
An optician is a technician who has been trained to dispense vision correction solutions such as glasses and contact lenses, but has not been trained to diagnose or treat eye diseases. An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor who has completed a degree in medicine then have done a two year masters specialization program in ophthalmology.
In Kenya, optometrists are trained to a Bachelor of Optometry degree from Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology, as well as a Diploma in Optometry from Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) in Nairobi.
The roles of optometrists include carrying out eye examinations, using diagnostic equipment to diagnose eye diseases and prescribing corrective lenses such as glasses, contact lenses and other vision aids. They also provide advice on how to care for one’s eyes and how to correct vision problems. It is recommended to see an optometrist at least once a year, or more often if you have any vision problems or have other risk factors. If you are over 40, if you have a family history of eye diseases, if you experience any changes in your vision, or if you wear contact lenses, a visit to the optometrist is recommended.
